Make sure to get Theraputty brand only!I've had mixed success with ordering Theraputty through Amazon. Unfortunately, Amazon throws all reviews for certain types of products together, so whether it's brand-name or off-brand, you'll not know until it arrives, or if you read the description and supplier very carefully. I was originally given Theraputty by my OT for recovery from a badly broken wrist - of course my right, dominant wrist! - and thanks to faithfully using this along with my other exercises twice a day for 6 months, I recovered full use of my wrist and hand, even though my surgeon predicted that I would not. After a number of months of heavy usage, the putty developed an unpleasant odor and I knew it was time to replace it. Unfortunately, I was not aware when I ordered a new batch, that it was an off-brand. Oily and stringy, ugh! I got a refund (no returns for this type of putty due to germs, no doubt). Then I researched what was actually being sold by Amazon and quickly learned about the off-brands. However, of you only order the Theraputty brand, you should get the real thing. That's what I ordered this time, and have given the lower rating because what I received was, I suspect a bad batch. It's supposed to be red-soft, but what this blob feels like is similar in stiffness to the green version. I've been given a refund and will reorder, but only after communicating with the seller. Buyer beware! 3Highly recommendWonderful quality. I I bought this for my students with autism, I hide small objects in the putty for them to find. I keep one at the work with teacher table as a break in between working. Another one is in the basket that we take to lunch. The students can play with it when they finish eating lunch. We love it a lot, 5Big enough to shareLove this pack for the sensory area in my classroom. Different students really prefer different consistencies and this allows everyone to do the same thing, but still have some choices. The larger size containers allows friends to play together with one container. 5Unless you are Andre The Giant, you don't need 6 oz. for personal use.I like this product. I think it's a high quality item and appears to do what it's designed to do. I looked at other reviews and decided the standard 2 oz. size that comes in the variety packs might not be a large enough lump to effectively use. I don't have basketball player hands. They're about average size. That said, unless you are Andre The Giant, or that guy from GoT, you don't need more than about 3 or 4 oz - AT MOST. I pulled off a ball that should be about 2 oz and it's plenty enough for me.Also - I used to be a carpenter. I still lift weights regularly and have very strong hands. I purchased the Green product instead of blue or black, figuring it'd be more appropriate to just maintaining strength and range of motion. It's one of the middle of the road firmness options... It is quite firm. The green level will actually help you BUILD hand strength. Unless you are a regular boulderer or rock climber, you shouldn't need to go any firmer than this. I would actually recommend yellow or coral color putty for most normal human beings. 3Not actual Theraputty, or very bad quality control.Product came in some random plastic container with a sticker on the side saying "Theraputty 6 oz". I was suspicious at that point whether someone had just put some nasty Silly Putty in a container and called it Theraputty. I spend 12 bucks getting the authentic stuff only to get completely disappointed. After opening it, it had the smell like cheap plastic and the putty itself was very very soft. I ordered the green (medium) and it is so soft it melts on the table when left alone for a few minutes. It is way softer than the same green Theraputty used at my son's Occupation Therapy, and they are supposedly more hard when they are brand new. This must be some kind of cheap imitation. I'm feeling totally deceived. 2Great anxiety relieverI bought this set for my son to help relieve his anxiety. I like that the set comes with six different resistances. There is a nice amount in each container, which is great for his teenage sized hands. It would also be a nice amount for an adult. And for a younger child, you could break off smaller pieces and share it among several children. I gave this four stars instead of five, because the two weakest resistances don't really provide any stress relief since they are very easily moldable. They might be good for someone who is recovering from a stroke or needs to build hand strength back up from an in jury. The various resistances being color coded is a positive attribute, as well. This makes it easy to select the resistance needed and also put them back correctly. My son says he uses these nightly and it helps him relax before he goes to sleep. I am happy we found something that helps him calm down and release stress. Overall, this is a great product, and I would recommend it for anyone with stress/anxiety.4Skip the blue and head straight to the blackIf you where debating between the two I'd say go straight to the black from the green. The blue isn't very pliable and more like working with plastic then with putty. However the black is firm yet very pliable while still giving firm resistance to strengthen fingers. i hide small toys in it and also have him push marbles in the putty we also do a lot of twisting activities 5Very convenientIt helped my autistic child a lot we hide toystory mini figures inside them and then we would ask him to find each character, it is very helpful and convenient.I would recommend it for any child it would really help kids strengthen their fingers which could help them in writing and grabbing the pencil 5Good so far. Labels need work.I just received a full set of the 4 oz size. So far, I really like them. They're a great way to build up my hand strength, and kind of fun just to work them at the office, or while watching television.I have reasonably large hands and the 4 oz seems plenty big enough.One small issue which cost a star in my rating was labeling. I'm not a physical therapist, so I'm unaware of the standard color scheme. Nowhere was there a key that showed which color is which firmness. Each tub had a label showing it was 4 oz. One tub had no label at all.This was moderately easy to resolve in a quick web search. We purchased the red theraputty to build strength for handwriting. It gives you a workout and you can have fun messing with it. I would recommend that you get the 6 ounce size of putty because it is the minimum amount I feel you could use and have it be effective. I have smaller hands and use the entire ball so I feel it is worth the extra money. We have used it for several months and it is still in good condition.prosGoodFunDoes not dry outConsGets dirtyYes it gets dirty because some dirt gets mixed in with the putty over time. You should also be aware that it will get on your clothes if you are not careful and it might stain. However The putty is good and I would recommend it to people that want to build muscle strength for handwriting. 5Great!My eight year old has dysgraphia, and I ordered this set on the advice of his occupational therapist. It's identical to the putty he uses in therapy (he uses the orange/red at OT). We keep one of these containers in the car so that he can work with it and warm up his hands on the way to school, and we keep the other inside the house. I have started using it occasionally myself; I was diagnosed with arthritis when I was 36, and my hands can get pretty stiff sometimes. Working with the putty for a little bit helps alleviate that. Very happy with this purchase.5No mess and great to exercise handsThis product was recommended by my kids' occupational therapist to help strengthen their fingers for better writing. It comes in different weight options and this one is just right for my 6-10 year old kids. 5Having the Extra Extra Soft Important For Kiddos With Developmental DisabilitiesI recently bought this product so I could begin increasing grip and finger strength a bit more for our son, who has a wide array of developmental delays. I noticed as we've returned from some of our walks in the past few weeks that he doesn't have the finger or grip strength to work the opening on the outside of our front door (it has a thumb lever that has to be pressed down before you push in on the handle). It's kind of ironic that a kiddo who has the overall strength to run around with a 12lb ball can struggle with finger and hand tasks, but that is the boat kiddos with developmental disabilities can find themselves in.What makes this a stand out product and why I would recommend this if you have a kiddo with muscle tone issues you are working with is the 6 different levels of firmness. Four seem to be what many offer, which correspond to the four middle resistance levels on this product. But for many kiddos with developmental challenges of a similar nature to my son's, the tan extra extra soft is the right place to start. The extra firm black I'm not picturing him being able to use that for a good long while, he's going to master that front door opening long before he can get this stuff to budge, but I still think it's pretty useful to have that in there too.So if you have a kiddo with sensory issues, this feels different then play do. My kiddo, it took months of work before I could even get him to touch play do, and I mean months. And then, once he was willing to touch it, he decided he pretty much only wanted to eat it, because he doesn't really see the purpose in shaping anything. The day this first came, he touched it expecting it to feel like play do and then pulled his hand back and looked at it like it was some sort of nasty viper to be avoided because it felt differently then he expected and he wasn't sure what to make of it. But by day two he was willing to touch it, try squeezing it, and pull it (probably because it is smoother and softer but not goopy, he does not like goopy things that stick to him), so I was pleased at how well he took to it, but just be prepared you could end up having to work a longer time with this if your child has a stronger sensory reaction to it. If that is the case, I recommend putting it in a Ziploc bag and seeing if they will manipulate it through that. That might get you in the door quicker there, so to speak.For sizing, my kiddo is fairly big for his age because one of his syndromes causes excessive growth, he's 4, going to be 5 in a few weeks, and I feel like the 2oz that we bought is a good size for him. I actually felt like it was fine in my hands as a grown woman, but if I had larger hands or a palm size (like say I was a grown man or had a teenage boy with bigger hands), I'd want one of the bigger sizes, and that's another thing about this product that is cool...they have all 6 resistance levels in different ounce amounts. So this is one I recommend because of the additional resistance levels, especially the extra extra soft, and the flexibility on sizing.5
