Customer Reviews

If I could give this 10 stars I wouldI purchased this product approximately a month ago. I broke my back 15 years ago and have dealt with back pain ever since. My doctor recommended decompression therapy to help my back. I didnt have time to go 3 times a week for 7 weeks to get the procedure done. I told me to try this home device. I have been using it for about 2 weeks now. Before i got this I was getting toradol injections, muscle relaxers that made me feel horrible and ibuprofen and tylenol 2-3 times a day. Since using this product morning and night I have not taken a single pain reliever and walking and moving 100% pain free. Doesnt even hurt to swing a golf club. This has been a game changer for me. I don't typically write product reviews but I had to on this. It is inexpensive compared to doctors appointments and injections and super convenient. You do need to have the upper body and shoulder strength to use the device properly but as long as you have this it can help your back more then you ever would think. Thanks for creating this device and helping my back so much.5So far so good!A little pricy for what it is. However, I have had ongoing problems with my lower back, hips, sciatica, for past 10 years and am willing to try anything if it can help me. I m now 49 years old, and spent two decades in my twenties and thirties heavy weightlifting, which seems to be really taking its toll. My dad, who has had two back surgeries in the past for hernia, swears by this machine, which he has been using for over ten years now and hasn t had any re occurring problems. I remember him trying to put me on it years ago, and I really didn t like the feel of it. He recommended it to me again, recently after I threw my back out again and have had to miss three weeks of work. He is in his 70 s and is still going to the gym. More than I can say for myself at this point in my life. So I went ahead and bought it. Now, have been using it three times a day for the past two weeks and it has taken a little getting used to but it has opened up the area in my lower back (L4-L5 region) without pulling on my hips/ obliques like inversion table. So far so good. I m back on my feet, after steroid injection and now rehabbing. I will try to write another review in a year to update progress longer term effectiveness of this product.4Not for taller people/Stinky foamThe Good: Somewhat easy to assemble, and lightweight which makes it portable. Why you would need portability depends on your lifestyle. The bad: The foam is horribly stinky, with a harsh chemical smell, and since your head is surrounded by this foam, there is no escaping the nasal burn from the chemical out gassing. The smell actually transfered to my t-shirt while I was using it the first few times and had to change my t-shirt every time because, I keep smelling it long after using the device/machine.The design fails for the same reason as most other decompression tables and devices. The mechanism for keeping your upper torso stable to allow for the traction/decompression, is a set of pads under your arms. In this device the pads are supposed to rest on the backs of your upper arm, along the triceps and shoulders. This just doesn't work very well because you are either having your arms pulled up over your head, or you have to use enough strength to keep your arms down, and this makes it difficult to relax your back muscles in order for you to actually receive and decompression of your spine. The strap that you lay over which is supposed to anchor your lower body, tend to cut into the tops of your thighs at the hip flexors and is rather uncomfortable, even with the stinky foam covering the strap. I tried using knee pad inserts but, it didn't help much. Finally I am 6'5" and so the ergonomics just don't really work right for me. The handles at the top of the device where you are supposed to hold on, are about 10 inches too short, and so they don't even reach my wrist. This means I either have to hold my hands straight out in the air, or angle my upper arms in order to contort myself in a way that allows me to hold the handles. Neither of these options is comfortable and makes relaxing impossible. My height also means the strap you are supposed to lay over, presses against my upper thighs, and not on my hips, which I reference above. So, all-in-all, if it weren't for the stinky foam, This might work OK for you if you are 'average' height and not too wide.2Needs two sizesI have only used this once, but I am now standing and walking completely upright. Feels weird. I have 2 herniated discs in lower back which have resulted in tight groin and buttocks muscles. This keeps me a little bent while standing and walking. Not enough that people would notice I think. I have been going to a Chiropractor and nothing much has changed. So this was amazing to me. What is really nice is I can hop on this anytime I feel I need it which will help the healing along with massages I believe. The only thing I have a problem with is I am 5'-1" and have to adjust to so much. The chest rest is under my chin and the belt is hitting the hammock. Be nice to have two sizes. But so far I am very happy.4Nubax actually worked for me... thankfully!I don't usually do reviews, but in this case I'll make an exception. For the record, I have no association or relationship of any kind with any of the companies, including Amazon or Nubax, I'm just a consumer who bought this product, and I'm willfully sharing my experience.WHY I BOUGHT THE NUBAXWhat led me to buy this product is pain and fear. I'm in my late 40's, and have suffered with chronic back pain for close to 10 years. Every 8-16 months I would go through a period of debilitating back pain, which would last 3-6 weeks. My family doctors always wrote it off as muscular, based on X-rays, and they always simply prescribed pain killers and muscle relaxers.About 4 months ago I woke up one morning virtually unable to move. My lower back was so painful I couldn't even walk. My family doctor phoned in the prescription for the usual pain medication and muscle relaxers. After a week or so, the pain subsided slightly, enough to let me walk, but the problem wasn't going away this time. Worse, it was starting to affect my entire right side, including my shoulder and my right hip and leg. I was scared. That led to an appointment with an orthopedic surgeon. At first his opinion was lumbardosis, but I pressed for facts not guesswork, and he sent me for an MRI. The results were very surprising, to me and my orthopedic surgeon; three herniated discs in my lower back (L6/L5, L5/L4, L4/L3), very clearly visible in the MRI. This explains my chronic back aches. So, the doc prescribed physio-therapy, daily exercise, pain killers and muscle relaxers. His advise was do the exercises, and when I feel pain coming on take the meds. He further told me that there is no getting better. My only hope, provided I do the exercises religously, is that it won't get much worse. In his expert opinion, there is no way to reverse the damage of herniated discs. More concerning, he told me it was likely that it will get worse, and that I will eventually need epidural injections in the spine. GREAT!That's where my journey to find some long-term relief began. I surfed the web and talked to people, and eventually came to believe that traction was the best option. That led to two choices, inversion table or home-based traction devices like the Nubax. I was a little hesitant about inversion, I'm not very keen on hanging upside down. So I decided to start with the Nubax instead. Now, bear in mind that I had been doing daily back exercises for 2 years, and after my last episode of debilitating back pain I was in worse shape than ever before. The worst pain was getting up from a sitting position, and standing or walking. The day the Nubax arrived I was unable to stand or walk for more than 10-15 minutes without having to sit down and stretch my back to relieve the pain.MY RESULTSI immediately started using the Nubax, two to three times daily, 3-minutes at a time. At first, I could feel some limited relief, but nothing earth shattering. I wasn't sure I would keep the device. After about 2 weeks of continued use I experienced my first back crack (more like a little crackle), and suddenly my back felt a little better. This was very encouraging. After continued use I had another crack every five to seven days, each time I felt like I had taken a step forward in pain relief. Now, after using the device for approximately one month, I truly feel like I've made significant progress. I'm not healed, by any stretch of the imagination, but for the first time in years I now feel like there is some hope that I won't be crippled in my old age. I can actually stand and walk for more than half an hour now, with very little pain. I can push it to an hour if I do a little stretching to keep my back loose. In fact, during the Christmas holiday I stood for several hours cooking the holiday dinner. This may not seem like much to most people, but it was a heaven-sent gift to me. The progress I've made so far was certainly worth the price of the device.USAGE SUGGESTIONS:I have discovered some things that can make using the Nubax a little better, easier. Maybe these will help you.1- Wear loose clothing, or wear as little as possible on your torso. I prefer shirtless. The clothing can actually restrict your movement and limit the stretch you get. Belts also get in the way and will pinch your skin as you use the device, so take them off before you start.2- Use a timer, and try to stay in the device for two to three full minutes each time. I use the countdown timer function on my blackberry, but an egg time or any timer with a bell or chime will do.3- If you don't have a carpeted area where you can use the Nubax, use a folded towel or blanket under your knees so it is more comfortable. Make sure it is not too thick and that it doesn't slip, otherwise you'll find yourself slipping forward as you use it.4- At first I found the device awkward to use, and it was very uncomfortable, even painful, on my shoulders. I then developed a technique where I position the back of my upper arms against the pads, with my wrists on the handle bars. This takes the pressure off the shoulders, and greatly reduced (not eliminated) the pain on my shoulders.5- I use the Nubax two or three times daily, every morning after I do my back exercises, and then again as the very last thing I do before I go to bed at night (this is recommended by the manufacturer). The stretch before bed is vital because apparently it lets your back stay loose throughout the night without gravity compressing your spine. When time permits, I use the Nubax when I get home from work or at midday if I'm home.6- Concentrate on loosening your back while you use the Nubax, and try to concentrate your stretch on your lower back. It took me while to get it right, and music or an iPod may help. You'll notice yourself slowly sinking lower and lower throughout the exercise as you loosen up.7- Drink lots of water, apparently it helps to hydrate your discs in your spine, and improves disc healing (I was told this by a chiropractor and by my orthopedic surgeon).OTHER THOUGHTSLike most people have noted, the device itself is pretty simple, and the total sum of the materials is probably not more than about $50. It's not flimsy or anything, but certainly could have been made with heavier and better materials. Furthermore, the design could likely be improved and the whole device could be made to be more ergonomic and comfortable. That is the reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 4. But, with that said, I am glad I bought it, and I intend to continue using it for a long time, maybe for the rest of my life.PARTING ADVICEA word of caution to anyone reading this. Don't take this, or any other testimonial, as fact that this device will cure your ailment. My experience is my own, whether real or imagined, and there is no assurance that you will have the same experience as I have. No one can guarantee that you will feel better from using this device. My only suggestion is that you evaluate this info, along with other research, and decide for yourself if you think this device can help you. Honestly, I haven't even thrown out the box yet, in case I change my mind. But that is very unlikely now.I hope you find this review useful, and more importantly I hope you find relief for your back. There are few things I know of that are worse than a back pain.Good luck.4Saved my back.... put a pillow and Tubular Pipe Insulation.....Saved my back.... put a pillow on your thighs and 3 pieces of Tubular Pipe Insulation on the bar near your knees.... I put my knees on that bar with the Pipe Insulation.... now you can get comfortable and spend 10 minutes each day or twice per day in it.5Not that great, junkyThis is an over priced uncomfortable mild back stretcher. This company is taking advantage of people being in pain and over charging for a sub par piece of equipment. It does give a mild stretch and unlike my teeter it is easier to get in. However I constantly have to tighten things on it. I have to use a mat because it s killer on my knees and it pushes on my stomach. It does give a mild lower back stretch. I wanted it for my SI joint and lumbar and was hoping it might help my upper back and neck. It does nothing for mid, upper back or the neck. I can t tell someone not to buy it because it may help some people a little. Any help is temporary at best. I just think it s over priced and doesn t do a lot. I get a better stretch at the chiropractor when they put me on a tilt/drop table and stretch me than I do on this thing. If you order this, you will see what I mean it is cheaply made. This shouldn t be more than 89.00 in my opinion. There are other ways to do similar stretches with yoga straps. . I was hopeful as most are with chronic pain and unfortunately companies know that people in pain will open their wallets. When it finally breaks for good, it s going in the trash and I won t order another one. Fool me once as they say.2Reasonably comfortable, effective tractionAs a neurosurgeon, I see a lot of patients whom I feel might benefit from traction. I decided to buy several products to see which ones actually provided the best, most comfortable, most effective traction. I had a patient who swore by this device, so I decided to try one. It is a clever, functional device. The reason I didn't get it 5 stars is that the instructions were sort of cryptic.4Five StarsI have sciatic nerve issues and this machine coupled with chiropractic care has made a world of difference!5Traction for lower back only and not like an inversion tableI made a mistake purchasing this item before thoroughly researching what it could do. Due to the product's name, I was expecting it to be both a back traction machine AND an inversion machine (and even something else due to the "Trio" in the name), i.e. something that would have dual positions, one of which would take the pressure off my spine by allowing me to hang upside down or at least be in a zero gravity position. However, this is definitely not an inversion table/machine and does not work like the inversion therapy I have had in the past. This equipment only functions to facilitate a stretch in the lower spine by pending over a midpoint and pushing the armrests forward (which was actually quite uncomfortable on my neck and shoulders). Unfortunately, even on the maximum setting, the stretch I could achieve in my lower back didn't give me any more pain relief than the stretching I can do on my own without the use of a large piece of equipment. Since it had no way to work as an inversion table and was not useful as simply a back traction device, I had to return it. On the plus side, it seems to be a very well made piece of equipment (sturdy, nicely-crafted), and the seller ZBuys provided good customer service for the return.2
