This Brand's Quality Has Gone DownhilI have this same model from the same company, but about 10 years old, and the new one just doesn't compare in terms of construction quality. The old one felt sturdy and weighty in a good way. It had very strong gripping power and the fit and finish were all good. Has given me 10 years of quality service. But I used it outside a lot, and wanted a new one for grabbing things inside. So I bought a new one. This one is much lighter and just doesn't feel very good to use. The grip is weak in comparison to the other one, and the plastic handle has a very sharp edge that digs into your finger if you don't position your hand correctly. I'd pay more for a higher quality version. 3Only one flaw, well, maybe twoIt's great to have a short grabber, which this is, only 8 inches longer than a foot. A long grabber is good, too, as long as your arms are long enough to grab what the grabber just grabbed. But when you need a short grabber, this is about the only product I've ever found. It generally works fine, and you can rotate the grabber end so you can pick things up horizontally instead of vertically. This grabber has two flaws that make its use a bit awkward. First, the grabber tends to stay shut; the fingers don't always automatically open again once you have secured your item. You have to use the lever at the handle end to open them manually. The second problem is that the tips of the grabber are tillted outward, not either inward or simply flat. This does create issues when trying to pick up very flat items like papers. Despite this, I have almost worn out my first grabber. It's very convenient to take to places like the supermarket, to grab things on a higher shelf, and it fits easily in any suitcase or bag. 4The best - great qualityI have two small dogs whom I spoil with many toys and chew treats. That means that my home ends up having a lot of junk scattered on the floor, under and behind furniture, etc.. I'm 6'4" tall and stooping down (and kneeling) to pick it all up got to be a chore (and pain). Trying to think of a solution to my problem (and a firm believer that there is almost always a more efficient method to accomplish any unpleasant task), I suddenly recalled seeing groundskeepers using this tool. I had no idea what it was called, but eventually found it here on Amazon by doing several key word searches. There were several brands available. The other grabber brand with suction cups looked flimsy to me (the fact that they sell replacement suction cups is an admission of its poor quality). Based on the reviews, I ordered this one; I'm glad that I did. I began using this immediately: I picked up dog toys, treats, and even a sponge that fell behind my washer that I had given up hope of ever retrieving. This is lightweight but well made. The grabber ends seem to hold on to everything without slippage (my guess is that the weight limit is about five pounds or so). The grabber end rotates easily with a quick pull and turn. I love this. I help with landscaping at my church once a month and I am going to bring this with me so that I can pick up garbage without having to get down on my knees. I even ordered a second, shorter version (the 32" version) as this 48" model is too long for some jobs (but perfect for getting things out from under furniture of off shelves). This is a great tool. Every home should have at least one! 5Not as described - no trigger lockThe description of this item is clearly misleading. The following is a copy from the product description " Locking Mechanism: (a) Engage by pushing lever down before squeezing trigger, (b) Squeeze trigger to grab object, keep squeezing to lock, and (c) Disengage by pushing lever up, remove object from jaws. " I searched for a PikStick like my previous one that had a locking mechanism on the side of the handle; according to product description this was it - NOT! Disappointed. 3I'm dealing with an injury that requires I use a ...I'm dealing with an injury that requires I use a scooter and I can't always reach things, especially when something falls on the floor. This has been a lifesaver for picking up things, including those as thin as a sheet of paper. Doesn't work so well on plastic bottled drinks, but it's likely not intended to. 5Absolute BEST device of it's type... but not perfect.I've had several of these over the years... they do wear out after heavy use, but I have to tell you Whether you need the longer ones or short version like this one, PIKSTIK BRAND IS THE BEST! Best because of the design. I have problems bending over, I work in a machine shop and often drop wrenches, cutting tools and other things... Pikstik won't pick up everything I drop, but at the end of the day, I have used it a hundred times and saved MUCH wear and tare on my back. And you would be surprised, depending on the shape of what you want to pick up, if you can get a deeply occlusive grip on the item, 5 to 10 pounds is not out of the question.... but then again, if the shape is such that it deters the gripping ability, you might not be able to pick up something more than 8 Oz.I have one of these (32 ") in my car, and about 4 of these (also 32") around the house, 2 (32") and a 20" one at work. These at work get the heaviest abuse and as such have to be replaced more often. I have gone through several. In the last year or two though, I have experienced several unexpected failures.... most recently my 20" broke as I was gripping a plastic tube from the floor... the cap end of the handle (closest to your thumb) broke off where the back pin that goes through the handle is... near the hanging hook. This falure rendered the pikstik completely usles since that pin holds the internal mechanism. I've had a couple crack around the neck of the handle (electrical tape patches this a bit, but it's still in a weakened state... I've had several where the cap at the bottom of the grip (near your little finger) spontaneously broke... wasn't even using the thing when they broke!... it is the design, the single screw holds the cap on but in a manner where the plastic cap is being bent while being held shut... If they tighten the screw too tight at the factory, the thing is prone to spontaneous breakage.... though the pickstik still functions pretty well after this type of part failure. Since I have been using these pikstiks for many years, and because these failures I listed in this paragraph have only been happening the last 2 years or so, I believe the plastic they have been using recently, is more brittle than what they used to use.I know this has become long and sounds like I don't like these things, but NO, I love these, they are the best product of this type I have been able to find.... others might be OK for picking up paper from your yard, but these are real work-horses by comparison. 4Best Grabber I Have Ever UsedI have tried several other pick up/grabber sticks because due to surgery I cannot bend down to pick things up off the floor and believe me, I drop things alot!!!We have tried the Grabber (as seen on TV) and others through catalogues and in stores. None of them works that well and practically all of them have either fallen apart, broke into pieces or don't pick everything up. The one brand is very cheaply made with very unstable aluminum and the tips have "suction cups" that don't work to pick things up partly because the rubber on the suction cups is very thin and collapses. Another brand is made almost completely of brittle black plastic with pointy tips and it is very difficult to squeeze tightly enough to hold tight. Another has a metal shaft with a squared off end at one side and a pointed plastic end on the other side. It cannot pick of pens coins or small things because the tips are different on each side so there is no stabilization when lifted off the ground.I purchased the 32" PIKSTIK due to reviews here on Amazon and the length, which is longer than some of the others I have tried. My family and I have tried to pick up many small things off the floor and items on higher shelves in the kitchen and closets. The tips on the PIKSTIK are squared off and and are the same size. They are made of a non slip rubber material. The squeeze trigger is easy to use and the ends can be rotated 90 degrees to the most comfortable orientation. It picks up the smallest thinks like pens and even pins with ease. I am pleased with the way the PIKSTIK works! 5Excellent at usabilityOriginal post: Sadly, the performance exceeded the life span. 2 weeks after receipt I needed a new one. Loved the performance.Addendum: this tool is priceless at picking up the seeds from maple trees. I will be buying this product again and will be more gentle with use. I suspect my contribution to this breaking on me was tapping (not always gently) the edge of the 5-gallon bucket I was using to drop the debris into; being wet, I utilized the extra measure to get the debris off of the stick. It may be more cheaply made then the replacement my husband bought for me locally, but it is unsurpassed in picking up those pesky seeds that literally carpet our back yard. I will be buying this again for myself so I can stop using the one belonging to the husband...before I bust his too! 3I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS USELESS CHEAPLY MADE PRODUCT! PLEASE READ THIS REVIEW BEFORE YOU PURCHASE.I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS USELESS PRODUCT, FEELS CHEAPLY MADE. My Brother in law had a stroke and cannot use his left hand at all. I bought this because it was said by some users on here that it would help with dressing. He got this 2 days ago as I had it mailed to him and today I got to view my gift for the first time. Completely useless for gripping and pulling on a piece of clothing. Yeah you could grab up a bunched up piece of laundry or a towel but to grip a piece of clothing with out the clothing slipping right out of the teeth is NOT POSSIBLE. if you were trying to hold the top of the pants, guide an effected weak leg into it with the gripper holding the pants it would slide right out of the gripper. The smooth place where the gripper would meet on a thin object has no teeth to hold an object. Only the 2 "tipped Up" ends have a rubber grip teeth and they are useless for traction to pull on a thin object of clothing. Bunched up , no pressure or resistance, sure it will grasp that but not what I wanted or bought it for. When I gripped it on my finger I could pull my finger right out and the PLASTIC end pieces were even out of alignment and had lateral "GIVE" . I am so mad at myself for believing all these 5 star reviews and me wasting my hard earned little bit of money I could bite a nail in half! I bought it because of the company statements about it being a metal cable that wouldn't stretch out. Well I'm here to tell;you that may be true but it will not hold an thin object with any resistance. The grip part is a cheap feeling hard plastic feels like pulling the plastic trigger on a cheap WATER GUN. Click my name and see my other reviews because you can trust my opinion. This might work ok for picking up stuff like a remote control, wet clothing in washing maching ahhh maybe but it feels like using it for that kind of weight could quickly break it. 2No locks, built cheaply -- not like the old PicStik!I just received the 32 " yellow PikStik and realized that it wasn't made in the same as my 32 PikStik that I've had for years. The new PikStik has NO LOCK! It feels too light in my hand and seems very cheaply made. The new one will be used in one room where I don't have to use a steadier PikStick -- just for light items up high. I opened it already -- can't return. It's NOT worth the $$ that I paid for this piece of crap. Have they stopped making the PikStick with the locks on either side of the handle? My old one locks in 2 positions. Photos posted with this are of my OLD PikStik. Anyone know where to find the old model? 1
